Covid-19: Containment zone number goes up in Chennai – Times of India

CHENNAI: There are 1,119 streets in Chennai which are under containment zones, as on April 12.
Each of these streets have more than three cases with 210 streets having more than six cases and 52 streets with more than 10 cases.
Teynampet and Royapuram zones have the maximum number of cases. In terms of area, Mylapore has the maximum number of active cases across Chennai with 132 cases followed by, T Nagar (130 cases), Nanganallur (126 cases), West Mambalam (113 cases), Chepauk (104 cases) and Vepery (101 cases).
Some streets have more than 30 active cases like the one near DAV Girls School that has about 38 cases.
Even though the guidelines have specified to contain streets with more than three index cases, the civic body is taking abundant precaution and has put any street with three cases under containment. However, the houses will not be sealed. Only streets that have more than six cases will have perimeter control with a staff employed at the street entrance and exit.
“People with emergency requirements can go out of the streets. Only streets with more than 10 cases have been completely blocked and our staff will help them with their requirements,” said Alby John, deputy commissioner, incharge of health department, GCC.
The civic body has already begun extensive surveillance by appointing around 6,000 fever workers in these streets. This number will be doubled to 12,000 workers next week.
Around 1,000 focus volunteers have been appointed to help patients in these containment zones. This number will also be doubled.
“Nearly 12 screening centres to take CT scan and other tests of patients will be functional this week. This will prevent crowding in hospitals. Number of fever clinics held on road sides is about 50 now. This will be scaled up to 400 to identify more symptomatic patients,” said an official.
