Among them, thickly populated Adyar accounts for 33 containment zones and one of the wards in the zone also has more than 10 streets under containment

CHENNAI: Containment zones in Chennai continue to increase at a quick pace. From 308 on April 25, the number rose to 375 in just three days, which is a 21.8% increase. Containment zones are streets where more than 10 active Covid-19 cases have been recorded; GCC imposes strict containment measures in these streets with police guarding the entry and exit points.
Around 60% (205) of the city’s containment zones are in its central part comprising zones 6-10 — Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam. The city’s north has 94 containment streets, while the south zone has 76.
Teynampet zone continues to top the list with 83 containment streets, while Royapuram comes second with 74. Analysis of data released by Greater Chennai Corporation shows that the containment streets in Teynampet are spread across the zone’s 18 wards. Exceptions are Beemanpet (ward 123) that has more than 10 containment streets, and Krishnampet (ward
120) that does not have a single containment street. In comparison, Royapuram has three wards (Kondithope, Egmore and Periyamedu) with more than 10 containment streets.
The figures also show that containment streets in the city south — made of Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones — has doubled in a week. On April 22, the region had 34 containment streets; this jumped up to 76 by April 28. Among them, thickly populated Adyar accounts for 33 containment zones and one of the wards in the zone also has more than 10 streets under containment.
Wards in zones such as Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Perungudi and Sholinganallur, which were added to the city corporation only in 2011, continue to be have less containment zones. For instance, not a single ward in Tiruvottiyur has a street with more than 10 active cases. Wards recording nil containment streets has reduced from 84 on April 25 to 80 on April 28.
