Chennai: A shocking case came to light in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai on Friday where a childless elderly couple, fearing a possible separation due to COVID-19 infections, ended their own life.

The incident took place in Maduravoyal where they hanged from the ceiling of their single-room home. The couple, identified as Arjunan (70) and Anjalai (60) left no suicide note behind and committed suicide by making two nooses with the same saree.

Arjunan COVID-19 test was awaited

As per the report, Arjunan was not feeling well for the past few days and had undergone an RT-PCR test and the result was awaited. While he was a caretaker of a small temple in the locality, his wife was a housemaker.

The neighbours informed the police that the couple was distressed on thoughts of being separated if Arjunan tests turned out to be positive, as per the report in the Times of India.

Arjunan younger brother saw them hanging

The incident unfolded when Arjunan’s younger brother, P Shanmugam, who brought food for the couple when Arjunan fell sick knocked on the door on Friday.

When nobody opened the door, his younger brother peeped through the window, and to his utter shock, he saw both his brother and sister-in-law hanging from the ceiling. He broke open the door immediately and the ambulance was called upon where the crew declared them dead.

A case has been registered by the Maduravoyal police and the bodies have been sent for further medical examination.
