Tamil Nadu recorded 30,355 positive cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state tally to 14,68,864. Among these, Chennai reported 7,564 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 412505. The state recorded 293 deaths on Wednesday, putting the state toll at 16,471. A total of 226 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. A total of 19,508 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 12,79,658

In line with other states, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday announced it will float global tenders to import Covid-19 vaccines for the 18-44 age group. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai.

An official release said the central government has allocated 13 lakh vaccine vials to Tamil Nadu, which is not sufficient for vaccinating people in the age group of 18-44

After the state government imposed a lockdown three days ago, scores of migrant workers and others rushed to return to their native places. Though government buses were operating at full capacity, passengers who wished to travel to regions far away opted for private buses.

The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to adopt a new strategy to break the Covid-19 chain. They are now focusing on the door-to-door screening, deploying doctors to offer free teleconsultations, supplying free medicine kits to those who take the swab test at testing centres, etc.

Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi on Tuesday said those who come to testing centres of the Corporation and other private laboratories with Covid-19 symptoms like fever, cough or body pain, loss of smell, taste, etc will also be considered as suspect cases and they will be provided with a basic medicine kit. He said people who are awaiting their test results tend to get in contact with other people causing the spread.

Three persons were held by the Chennai Police on Tuesday after they purchased Remdesivir drug at the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital using the documents of a person who succumbed to the disease a week ago.

The police identified Sivakumar (43) and Satheesh Kumar (35) of Madhavaram, Christy Paul (34) of Ayanavaram. According to the city police, Sivakumar had brought Remdesivir drug for Selvam who was infected with Covid-19 on April 29. A couple of days later, Selvam had succumbed to the disease. Sivakumar had then taken a colour Xerox of Selvam’s documents and had brought medicine from the counter.

The State Transport Authority of Tamil Nadu has collected a penalty of more than Rs 38 lakh from private omni bus operators in the past two days for over-charging passengers.
