20,000 cops to be deployed in Chennai from today – Times of India

CHENNAI: Greater Chennai police will enforce a stricter lockdown from Monday by deploying 20,000 police personnel and re-enforcing the sector-wise lockdown.
The police have registered a total of 3,980 cases for violating lockdown norms and seized 3,446 vehicles till Saturday. On Sunday, in many parts of the city the police pressed in patrol vehicles to control the crowd as they thronged the markets to make purchases throwing caution to the wind.
On May 18, Greater Chennai police commissioner Shankar Jiwal had made the restrictions stringent by dividing the city into 348 sectors. E-registration was made mandatory to travel within the city and 320 checkpoints were set up. All the flyovers and bridges will remain closed. Police are also erecting barricades in interior stretches.
Jiwal has appealed to the public not to step out without necessity or risk getting booked for violation. Police said vehicles of those motorists indulging in repeated violations will be seized and will not be let out anytime soon. People with medical emergencies will be let off, while delivery executives will be allowed only during specific takeaway timings.
Meanwhile on Saturday, the traffic police registered 2,410 cases against those who were roaming around without any reason. A total of 907 vehicles were seized, including 39 autorickshaws. Law and order police also registered 1,570 cases and seized 2,539 vehicles. A total of 3,243 cases were registered against people for not wearing masks and 348 for not following social distancing. A total of 55 shops were closed for violating lockdown norms and a fine of Rs8.97 lakh was slapped on them.
On Sunday, police kept making announcements using the public address system warning vegetable vendors not to fleece customers. The 350 Amma patrol vehicles will also join the regular patrol vehicles to check whether there is any illegal sales.
