Tamil Nadu adds 5,755 Covid cases, 150 deaths – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 5,755 Covid-19 cases and 150 deaths on Friday, when 8,132 people were discharged from the active cases registry. At the end of the day, when there were 47,318 people under treatment for the viral infection, the cumulative case tally crossed 24.5 lakh and the toll touched 32,051.
Coimbatore continued to top with 698 cases and 26 deaths. It was followed by neighbours – Erode (597 cases), Salem (398) and Tirupur (361). While Chennai reported 350 cases, Trichy logged 220 and Madurai 104. At least 19 districts reported fewer than 100 cases, five reported fewer than 50 cases. Except Coimbatore which had 6,721 active cases, all districts had less than 5,000 people under treatment and 11 districts had less than 500.
After Coimbatore, the highest number of deaths were from Vellore (16), Tirupur (13) and Chennai (11). At least eight districts reported no deaths on Friday.
Health minister Ma Subramanian said with fewer cases of Covid-19, the cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) were also dropping. The state has so far reported 2,822 cases of black fungus, he said. From about 95 admissions a day, GHs now get fewer than 20 admissions a day. “The expert committee led by senior ENT surgeon Dr Mohan Kameshwaran has submitted a treatment strategy for the fungal infection, we have adequate drugs and more than 7,000 beds to treat patients,” he said.
On Friday, for the second consecutive day, the state vaccinated more than 4 lakh people at the government vaccination centres. The 4.2 lakh people vaccinated took the total dosages since January to 1.36 crore.
