MADURAI: The Madras high court on Thursday dismissed a plea which sought for a direction to the Centre to educate the people of Tamil Nadu to respect the country India or Bharat by calling its name as it is in the official writings and speeches by adhering to patriotism, sovereignty and respect.
In his public interest litigation, advocate T Ramasamy from Dindigul district also sought for an interim injunction to restraining the chief secretary of Tamil Nadu from using the word ‘ondriyam’ (Union) while addressing the nation India or Bharat in any of their communications, writings or speeches till the disposal of the petition.
A division bench of Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice S Ananthi observed that though the petitioner had filed the petition with the above prayer, the submission of the petitioner’s counsel before the court was directed against chief minister M K Stalin and the council of ministers in the manner in which they address the Centre while speaking in the legislative assembly.
The judges observed that in their considered view, the prayer sought for was thoroughly misconceived and no such direction could be issued by this court directing the CM or the council of ministers to speak in a particular fashion. Furthermore, the prayer was absolutely vague as to what sort of education the petitioner wants to give the people of Tamil Nadu. Hence, the judges dismissed the petition.
