Chennai schools seek Tamil Nadu government nod to restart Classes X and XII – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: With Puducherry announcing reopening of schools for Classes IX to XII from July 16, schools in the city have urged the state government to consider reopening for Class X and XII on a trial basis from the first week of August.
Several principals said prolonged online classes have affected the quality of education of students, and physical classes should start with a sense of urgency.
Some principals said attendance should not be made mandatory as parents may hesitate to send their kids for classes.
GJ Manohar, principal of MCC Higher Secondary School, said the government can reopen schools only for Class XII students on a trial basis. “If the current online classes continue, the quality of education of children will get severely affected,” he said.
B Purushothaman, senior principal of Everwin Group of Schools, said the state is limping back to normalcy. “We are ready to operate on a shift basis. The government should reopen schools for Classes IX to XII in the first phase. It should be followed by VI to VIII in the next phase and later for other classes,” he said.
Most private schools are getting ready for reopening.
N Vijayan, senior principal of Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Tambaram, said staying several months at home creates physical and emotional issues for the children. “We have started cleaning classrooms and campuses. The government should strike a balance between safety of the children and education. They can start physical classes for only board exam students from the first week of August. For primary classes, they can reopen from January 2022,” he said.
P G Subramanian, principal of Bhavans Rajaji Vidhyashram in Kilpauk said with the situation returning to normal mode schools can be reopened for Class X and XII students.
