Tamil Nadu Chennai News August 11, 12 Highlights: Eight police personnel from Tamil Nadu are among 152 police officers in the country who have been conferred with the ‘Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation’ for 2021 for their high professional standards of investigation of crime. The Union Home Ministry, in a statement, said the awardees include 28 women police officials from across the country.

The Madras High Court Wednesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to arrest all the accused in the 2019 Pollachi sexual assault case and that the probe agency must take an “earnest effort” to commence the trial by the first week of September. The Court also asked the Coimbatore Mahila court to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it within six months.

A 30-year-old man fell into the Cooum river from Napier bridge while taking a selfie on Tuesday night and was rescued eight hours later by police. According to the police, Karthik, a resident of Periamet, went to the bridge at around 10 pm and leaned on the walls to take a selfie. When his phone slipped out of his hand, he tried to grab it and accidentally fell into the river.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court Tuesday granted conditional bail to Kanniyakumari Roman Catholic priest P George Ponniah, accused of making derogatory remarks against ‘Bharat Mata’, Hindu religious beliefs, and against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Justice B Pugalendhi granted bail after Ponniah’s advocate submitted an affidavit undertaking that the priest would not make such statements against religious and political leaders in the future. He also said that the petitioner has heart problems and is taking treatment. The counsel added that the priest is prepared to stay away from the Kanniyakumari district.
