Take genuine steps to protect waterbodies: Madras HC – News Today

Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed the Chief Secretary of Tamilnadu to take genuine steps to protect the water bodies and forests and the coastal regions of the State, so that the future generations find the state habitable and can survive here.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice PD Audikesavalu, said, “It cannot be a piecemeal solution pertaining to one matter or one area or one waterbody, though the aggregate has to take care of the individual.”

Also, taking serious note of deaths due to drowning in abandoned stone quarries, the Madras high court ordered compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to families of two victims and directed the government to fence such quarries.

The government and the lease-holder of the quarry must pay the compensation, the court said.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has issued a notice to the Tamilnadu government in connection with manual scavenging. The High Court has directed all the corporations to submit an undertaking that will state that there will be no manual scavenging under their jurisdiction.
