Chennai to have cloudy skies, little rain – Times of India

CHENNAI: The depression that has formed over the Bay of Bengal may be strengthening, but the city is not likely to get much rain because of it in the coming days. The depression is too far from the city and the high wind speed will keep rain away from the coast and plains.
However, Chennai is set to experience cloudy days and may get some rain till Sunday forenoon or afternoon before seeing sunny days for the next couple of days.
A met department forecast for the next 48 hours said the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy and thunderstorms with light rain are likely to occur in some areas.
The depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is around 470km away from Odisha coast. It is not likely to turn into a cyclone but will cross the coast between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
“The city getting rain depends on the depression weakening. If it strengthens, we will not get rain. But other parts of the state, especially hilly regions, are likely to get rain,” said N Puviarasan, director, area cyclone warning centre, IMD. The city will get moderate rain in some areas, he added.
The met department has forecast heavy rain in southern districts and in districts along the Western Ghats on Sunday while adding that thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rain is likely over Theni, Dindigul, Thenkasi and Kanyakumari districts on Monday.
Hilly regions, including the Ghats, are likely to get rain because of the high wind speed that causes the wind to hit the hills and rise to form clouds, Puviarasan said. The wind speed will prevent that from happening in the plains.
Live weather tracking sites show heavy rain over the Bay of Bengal due to the depression in the coming days. However, the city is largely spared of rain while other parts of the states are likely to get some showers. Sunday is likely to be mildly cloudy or sunny for most part of the day with mild rain in some areas towards the evening in the city.
