Rain batters Chennai, more rain expected in next 24 hours – Times of India

CHENNAI: After a week of brief spells of late night showers, the city woke up to a downpour which continued till the evening in several parts of the city and on the outskirts on Tuesday.
According to the recorded data at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, 31.mm of rain was recorded at the Meenambakkam station and 4.1 mm at the Nungambakkam station, announcing the onset of the north east monsoon.
In Chengelpet, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts, there were heavy rainfall in isolated areas and in the coming days Meteorologists have forecast moderate rainfall in the city and surrounding districts until Friday.
In Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, more than 100 mm of rainfall was recorded and in several neighbourhoods, water logging was reported.
In West Tambaram, 93 mm of rainfall was recorded, while in Sathyabama University station, 56 mm of rainfall was recorded and in Taramani, 62 mm of rainfall was recorded indicating intense rains in the city’s suburban areas. Residents in neighbourhoods of ECR and OMR had their daily routines affected as continuous rains through the day in the region meant that the authorities couldn’t drain out the water and public were seen wading through shin deep water in several areas like Injambakkam, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam.
In low-lying areas like Madipakkam, Velachery, Villivakkam while water was drained off from the main roads, interior roads were inundated and motorists had a tough time.
For the next 24 hours, the meteorological department has forecast Thunderstorm with heavy rain to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Theni, Dindigul and Coimbatore districts of Tamilnadu and Light to moderate rain at most places over rest Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
