CHENNAI: A 37-year-old woman was run over by a private bus in Velachery on Monday night. The deceased, Sangeetha of Dharmalingam street, worked as a maid in the locality. The accident happened when she was returning home on her bicycle at 7.50 pm, after finishing her job at a nearby apartment complex.
CCTV footage showed the driver was driving in a negligent manner without noticing the victim, who was right in front of the bus while negotiating a turn.
Police said that Sangeetha was waiting to cross the 100 Feet Road at a junction, when a private bus coming from Pallikaranai knocked her down while negotiating a turn. He did not notice her even after she came under the right wheel of the bus. He realized that he had hit a cyclist, only after a few members of the public came running to stop him from moving the bus further, police said. However, Sangeetha sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. Sangeetha usually finished her work early but on Monday she left after meeting another maid in the locality.
Before she could pedal to the pedestrian crossing, the driver ran over her. Eyewitnesses said that there was no indication that the mini bus was trying to negotiate a curve. The bus was coming from Pallikaranai. “Sangeetha was trying to get down from the bicycle, before which the accident happened,” said an investigating officer. On information, Guindy traffic investigation police retrieved her body and sent it for a post-mortem to the government Royapettah hospital. Police said that the bus driver should have been extra cautious as there was a pedestrian crossing and should have looked at all sides before taking a U turn.
A case of causing death due to negligence was registered against the driver, who was identified as Pushparaj, 27 of Ulundurpet and arrested the driver. Police have seized the CCTV footage and further investigation is on. Police have also seized the vehicle.
