Will season’s first cyclone bring rain to Chennai? – Times of India

CHENNAI: Both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are going to get busy as they are likely to power and steer two weather systems in the coming days. While the Bay of Bengal is likely to brew northeast monsoon’s first cyclonic storm, the Arabian Sea might cook up a low pressure area.
As on Tuesday morning, a low pressure area lies over South Thailand and neighbourhood. The associated cyclonic circulation extended up to mid tropospheric level. It was likely to emerge into Andaman Sea during next 12 hours. It might move westnorthwestwards and concentrate into a depression by December 2 and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the central Bay of Bengal during subsequent 24 hours. It likely to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach north Andhra PradeshOdisha coasts by the morning of December 4.
The IMD has said the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian sea and adjoining Maldives-Lakshadweep areas now lies over Southeast Arabian sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area and extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over Eastcentral Arabian sea off Maharashtra coast during next 24 hours.
But will Chennai be affected by these two systems?
The IMD said rainfall may decrease in Chennai from Tuesday and residents may even have some dry spells in the coming days. The agency has forecast light thunderstorms with light to moderate rain to occur over some areas in the city and suburbs for the next 48 hours.
The formation of the system could further lead to dry spells in the city and the state, officials said.
However, blogger Pradeep John said the system forming over Arabian Sea may bring rainfall on Tuesday night. “Tonight to morning we need to be careful, as we can see the pull effect rain happening with winds converging right over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet. This rain can sometimes surprise us. We have seen in the past when a low forms in the Arabian Sea, the clouds can pull from the other side can be persistent and dump 50-100mm,” he tweeted.
