CHENNAI: At least 13 districts report an increase in new cases on Tuesday, when the state reported a drop to 720 new cases compared to 730 it registered on Monday.
The nine deaths took the cumulative toll since March 2020 to 36,481. At the end of the day, 735 people were discharged from the state Covid registry, leaving 8,244 people still under treatment for the viral infection.
Chennai (115) and Coimbatore (109) were the only two district to report more than 100 cases. The two districts also have the highest number of cases. Coimbatore has 1233 active cases and Chennai has 1182. On Tuesday, Chennai reported the sharpest increase in new cases from 105 on Monday. Cases in Coimbatore went up from 106.
Eleven other districts reported an increase between on and three cases more than their Monday tally. However, at least 22 districts reported cases in single digits. While Dharmapuri reported 10 new cases, Tenkasi had zero new case. Nearly 95% of all hospital beds – non-oxygen, oxygen and ICU – were vacant across the state. The least number of active cases were in Perambalur (11) and Tenkasi (11) followed by Theni (20).
Of the nine deaths reported in the state, there were three in Tiruvallur, two in Salem and one each in Chennai, Coimbatore, Perambalur and Trichy. Thirty two out of 38 districts reported zero deaths.
At least 2.8 lakh people took the vaccine on Tuesday. This pushed the vaccine dosage in the state to 6.8 crore. In the private hospitals 27.40 lakh doses were administered since May 1.
