An assistant professor of a private arts and science college in Chennai’s Koyambedu was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly sexually harassing students by sending obscene messages.

The professor, on the pretext of conducting online classes, called female students after class hours and allegedly sent them lewd messages. Based on the complaints of the students, the college administration had fired him.

However, demanding legal proceedings against him, the students had staged a sit-in protest on Wednesday. The CPI(M) had also demanded his immediate arrest.

Following this, a complaint was lodged by the college principal against the accused.

The Koyambedu police said the accused has been booked under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act, 2002, and Section 67 of IT Act, 2000. He was remanded to judicial custody. His cell phone has been seized.

Speaking to IndianExpress.com, V Mariyappan, the Tamil Nadu secretary of the Student’s Federation of India (SFI), said, “The students complained against the professor on Tuesday. The management initially said they would conduct an inquiry and terminate him if he is found guilty. On Wednesday, the students demanded that he be arrested as well. Initially, females students were hesitant to complain, but submitted evidence to the police with support of other students.”
