Who will be Chennai mayor? – Times of India

CHENNAI: The hunt for the mayor candidate that has been reserved for a scheduled caste woman is on by the DMK whose MLAs and ministers are meeting party president and chief minister M K Stalin every day to push the name of a candidate from their constituencies.
Some of the front runners include R Priya from ward 74 in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar who is also from the chief minister’s constituency. “Since Kolathur is a place that requires a lot of development and much criticised projects such as Kosasthalaiayar drain project need to be implemented properly, she might be considered for the post. Also, she is very young, and a young mayor would be more open to new ideas,” said a DMK party spokesperson.
However, many others are also being considered including 29-year-old Sreedhani C from ward 70 (Perambur), Nandhini M A from ward 111 (Thousand Lights) constituency, 49-year-old S Amudha Priya from south region.
“Since there are two ministers, one from Saidapet and one from Harbour, the MLAs from the central region are looking for representation through a mayor post and Nandhini has been nominated by them to the party. However, the VCK party is also pushing for its candidate, Shanthi Alias Azhini from ward 135,” said a source.
The party cadre is clueless and will be informed about the candidate by the chief minister ahead of March 4, mayor election. The council will first be convened on March 2 where all 200 ward councillors will take oath. On March 4, the parties will nominate the mayor and deputy mayor candidates.
If the opposition also nominates a candidate, the Greater Chennai corporation will arrange a ballot and give symbols for the candidates and ask the councillors to vote. The votes would be counted on the same day, and the mayor would be elected.
