Sniffer dog detected drugs worth Rs 5.35 crores at Chennai airport

Chennai: A sniffer dog named Orio helped Custom authorities retrieve 542gm Methaqualone & 644 gm Heroin valued at Rs 5.35 crores at Chennai airport. An Ugandan national was arrested in this connection, the Customs department said on Tuesday.

With the assistance of sniffer dog ‘Orio’, Customs authorities retrieved the drugs from the baggage of a woman passenger who arrived here from Addis Ababa on December 18. A video shared by news agency ANI showed the sniffer dog assisting the officials at the airport.

Initial examination led to the retrieval of 1,542 grams of Methaqualone and heroin valued at Rs 5.35 crore under the relevant sections of NDPS Act, 1985, the Commissioner of Customs said in a press release.

The passenger was arrested an investigation was on, it said. Methaqualone is a sedative-hypnotic drug prohibited under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Earlier on Friday, over 900 grams of heroin worth Rs 6.31 crore was seized from a woman from Kenya. The passenger arrived from Sharjah (UAE) on December 13 and was intercepted by the officials at the international airport. Initial examination led to the retrieval of the banned drug which was concealed in her rectum.

In total, 902 grams of heroin worth Rs 6.31 crore was seized from the Kenyan national under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
