Coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu reach 12,488 – Times of India

CHENNAI: Three patients died in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday as the number of Covid-19 cases in the state reached 12,488.
As many as 87 of the 688 fresh cases came from other states or countries, according to the bulletin released by the Directorate of Public Health. Death toll in the state touched 84.
Chennai continued to remain the hotspot with 552 fresh cases. While Chengalpet recorded 22 cases, Tiruvallur eight and Kancheepuram five. Trichy, which had not seen a positive since May 12, recorded a case on Tuesday.
All the three deaths happened in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital — a 64-year-old with stomach cancer, 72-year-old with hypothyroidism and diabetes and an 82-year-old man.
At least 489 patients were discharged on Tuesday and there were active 7,466 cases.
At least 23 passengers, who came from Dubai tested positive. As many as 154 of their co-passengers in a Fly Dubai flight would be asked to remain in quarantine for a week, officials said. One patient who returned from the Maldives also tested positive.
In addition, 13 other passengers who had returned from Dubai, Kuwait and Malaysia earlier and tested negative during the preliminary test, turned positive on Monday.
Earlier, four passengers on board Air India Express flight from Kuwait that landed in Chennai on May 10, five passengers in an Air India Express flight from Kuala Lumpur that landed the next day, four others who travelled in an Air India Express flight from Dhaka that landed on May 14 tested positive.
Each of these flights had 186 passengers, who were asked to stay in paid or government quarantine facility. With these, 36 international passengers tested positive. Since May 9, ten flights have landed in Chennai and one in Trichy
However, the challenge is from the inter-state passengers as 49 people who came from Maharashtra by road tested positive. They included 20 people who reached district check posts at Tirunelveli, 10 other who reached Kallakurichi, six who reached Karur and five in Tuticorin. In Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Karur and Cuddalore, fresh cases were reported from other state returnees.
The total Number of people who tested dropped to 9,844 from 11,760 on Monday. Health officials maintained that they were not cutting down on tests. “Fewer people are tested because only that was required,” said a senior health official.
