CHENNAI: The DMK and its allies on Monday welcomed the Madras high court’s order to the Centre to constitute a committee to decide on providing reservation to other backward class students in all India quota for medical admission.
An alliance meeting convened by the DMK said it is a historic judgement and it shows that Tamil Nadu will be in the forefront in implementing social justice. The meeting passed a resolution praising the judgment.
“The Centre must immediately set up a committee as mentioned in the court order copy, within three months, to look into the reservation for medical aspirants,” the resolution stated.
The parties wanted the Centre to provide 50% reservation for backward and other backward classes, 18% for SCs and 1% for STs in medical admissions.
A total of 10 resolutions were passed in the meeting. A resolution passed in the meeting asked the AIADMK government to provide funds for all rural local bodies as per the recommendations of 14th Finance Commission. The meeting passed a resolution asking the police department to work beyond politics. Other resolutions included implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations in education and employment, cancellation of NEET and withdrawal of the new environment draft report.
The meeting focused on joining hands with parties across the country to protect freedom of expression.
They formed a committee with representatives from each party of the alliance for better coordination.
