Covid-19 infection rate falling in Tamil Nadu – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported 5,528 new Covid-19 cases and 64 deaths. The case tally touched 4,86,052 while death toll reached 8,154.
A total of 48,482 people are still under treatment for the viral infection.
As many as 6,185 people were discharged on Thursday, pushing the cure rate to 88%. The number of cured people rose to 429,416.
“We are now slowly reducing the infection rate in the state. The positivity rate is below 10% in most parts of the state barring districts like Cuddalore. But to maintain a low infection rate, people must follow pandemic rules – masks, social distancing and hand hygiene,” said health minister C Vijaya Baskar.
He said the state had added 400 more Covid-19 beds to the 800-bed facility in Stanley Medical College Hospital. “All the new beds are oxygen beds. It will help people in Chennai region,” he said.
Chennai reported 991 cases and 11 deaths while Chengalpet (279), Kancheepuram (173) and Tiruvallur (296) together added 748 new cases. The Chennai region had 16,541 active cases, including 10,845 in Chennai.
The other northern district reported 1001 cases and 14 deaths. Cuddalore had 263 cases followed by Villupuram (189), Vellore (152), Ranipet (118), Kallakurichi (113), Thirupathur (85), Tiruvannamalai (81). Together, the eleven northern districts had 2,740 fresh cases and 32 deaths.
The eight western districts together added 1,366 new cases. Coimbatore reported 440 cases, followed by Salem (300), Tirupur (155), Dharmapuri (124), Krishnagiri and Namakkal (123), the Nilgiris (69) and Erode (32). Together the districts clocked a dozen deaths.
The active cases in Coimbatore reached 20,839. With 545 patients getting discharged, the number of active cases fell to 3,790. The district also recorded two more deaths taking the toll to 340.
The eight central districts reported the lowest number of fresh cases, while the ten southern districts had the least deaths. The central zone had 700 cases and 12 deaths while the south had 721 cases and eight deaths.
