Chennai: Last year in October, a 23-year-old woman, with her lover’s help, had strangulated her husband to continue her extra-marital affair without any hindrance. She later claimed that her husband died due to excessive consumption of liquor; however, her story unravelled after her husband’s post-mortem report came in. The following month, a man, from the city’s Chitlapakkam locality, was murdered in front of his mother over his affair with a woman. Both incidents were a result of what the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) classifies as ‘illicit relationships’.

According to the latest data shared by the NCRB, during 2019, a total of 28 murders were committed in Chennai due to ‘illicit relationships’, the highest among the country’s 19 metropolitan cities with more than 2 million population. Also, the city recorded 90 murder cases related to disputes, the second-highest in aforementioned the category, with Delhi docking at the first position with 125 such cases.

Tamil Nadu recorded 2nd-highest cases of murders of senior citizens

The NCRB report also mentions that Tamil Nadu is second in the country in terms of murders of senior citizens. In 2019, the state recorded 117 such cases, preceded by Uttar Pradesh with a total of 209 cases. A retired police officer stated that most cases of murders of senior citizens have not been solved yet. 

Speaking to The Times of India, a police officer said patrolling has been increased and instructions have been issued to all city police stations to gather details of elderly people who reside alone.

Meanwhile, Chennai Air Customs officials arrested seven passengers who arrived from Dubai after 1.28 kg gold in the form of paste was extracted from their rectum. the officials have also seized two gold chains from their possession.
