Tamil Nadu records 5,489 fresh Covid cases, 66 deaths – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded5,489 newCovid-19 cases and 66 deaths on Sunday, taking the case tally to 6,19,996 and cumulative toll to 9,784. There are 46,120 people still under treatment for the viral infection.
While all districts recorded new cases, five of them had morethan 200caseseach. With 1,348 cases Chennai continued to top the table followed by Coimbatore (474).

Chennai (12), Coimbatore (7) and Chengalpet (6) recorded more than five deaths in the last 24 hours. On Sunday, Chennai’s neighbouring districts, Chengalpet (381), Tiruvallur (197), and Kancheepuram (146)together reported724 cases. Together the region had 23 deaths, including a dozen from Chennai. .
The other seven northern districts reported 625 cases and five deaths. Cuddalore reported 141 cases, Vellore 140 and Tiruvannamalai104.
The western districts reported the highest cases and deaths after the north. These eight districts had13,518 active cases, including 4,888 in Coimbatore and 2,692 in Salem. Together the eight western districts logged 1,546 cases and 20 deaths. After Coimbatore and Salem, Namakkal (165), Erode
(149), Tiruppur (147), and Nilgiris (122) recorded more than 100 cases, while there were 73 cases in Krishnagiri and 59 in Dharmapuri . Nigiris, Krishnagiri and Salem reported three deaths each.
The 10 southern districts together recorded 587 cases and 11 deaths. All districts in the south, barring Kanyakumari, which had 117 cases, recorded cases in two digits. Madurai had 82 and Tirunelveli 76. Ramanathapuram (22) had the lowest number of new cases. Two districts in the central zone – Nagapattinam (20) and Perambalur (11) — had the lowest number of cases across all districts.
The central districts added 654 cases – a majority in Thanjavur (244) followed by Tiruvarur (148), Pudukottai (72). Trichy recorded 68 cases followed by Karur (52).Thecentralzone recorded seven deaths. Active cases in the zone were 5,232 compared to 4,707 in the south.
In the last 24 hours 84,159 people were tested for Covid-19 in 189 authorised RT-PCR testing labs. The total number of people cured is 5,64,092.
