Tamil Nadu Telangana Assembly Elections COVID-19 Live Updates: Citizens in Chennai woke up to cloudy skies as parts of the city received moderate to heavy showers early Tuesday morning. According to private weather blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman, parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive widespread rainfall today and on Wednesday, with Chennai and Delta districts expected to receive good amount of rainfall.

Tamil Nadu recorded 838 positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the state tally to 8,21,550. Among these, Chennai reported 229 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 2,26,456. The state recorded 10 deaths on Monday, putting the state toll at 12,166. A total of 24 passengers who had returned to Tamil Nadu from UK and 20 of their primary contacts have tested positive for COVID-19 till date. A total of 2300 passengers had travelled to Tamil Nadu from UK between November 25 and December 23, of which 2146 have been tested. Among these, 24 have tested positive, 2122 have tested negative and the tracing of more passengers is underway.

After MDMK chief Vaiko, the leader of another DMK-led alliance partner, VCK’s Thol Thirumavalavan, has announced they will contest the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls under a separate symbol. Political experts believe that small parties in the DMK alliance had agreed to contest under its ‘Rising Sun’ symbol in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to defeat the BJP-led NDA. However, in the state election, they have the responsibility to secure their own vote share, along with recognition from the Election Commission.

In a big boost to the battered Tamil film industry, the state government on Monday issued a new directive removing the 50 per cent cap on occupancy in theatres. “Now, therefore the government hereby permits to increase the seating capacity of cinemas/theatres/multiplexes from existing 50 per cent to 100 per cent by following the Standard Operating Procedure issued already,” said the Tamil Nadu government in its later order.
