Chennai: With 1,459 new COVID-19 cases, active cases tally breaches 10,000-mark – Times Now

Chennai: The coronavirus cases have been rising at an alarming rate in Tamil Nadu as the state recorded 3,986 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.

Hotspot Chennai also witnessed whopping 1,459 new cases and the active cases tally breached the 10,000-mark on Wednesday. Also, out of every five patients, two patients under treatment for COVID-19 infections hail from Chennai.

Active cases in Tamil Nadu

The active cases tally in the state now stands at 27,743, as per the state health bulletin. In Chennai alone, the active cases stand at 10,685.

At least 17 people died due to the deadly contagious virus thus, pushing the fatality count to 12,821. Also, the case tally touched 9.11 lakh in the state.

COVID cases in Chennai

Chennai had witnessed a rapid decline in cases on February 9 where the city saw 1,550 cases. However, the city has been reporting a rise in the average cases since then.

Between March 19 and 25, the total number of fresh stood at 3,402. The city saw a weekly average of 524 fresh cases, 285 discharges, and four deaths. Although deaths were averaging at four, the average number of new cases rose to 869 with 486 discharges.

However, the city saw a rapid surge as already over 7k new cases have been reported in the last six days.

According to health secretary J Radhakrishnan, “We want to test people for symptoms, track at least 30 contacts of each positive patient in 72 hours. We also want to encourage more people to take the vaccine, as quoted by the Times of India.

COVID vaccination in Tamil Nadu

The state has administered 65,764 COVID-19 vaccination to the people. Out of which, 30,113 were senior citizens and 32,251 were above 45+. Since January, 34 lakh people have already taken the jabs.
