COVID-19: Chennai reports massive upsurge in cases; 2,564 tests positive – Times Now

Chennai: Chennai witnessed a massive surge in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as the city reported 2,564 new cases. Out of the total 7,819 cases reported from Tamil Nadu, hotspot Chennai witnessed a massive upsurge. 

Amid an upsurge in cases, 96,513 people underwent testing in the state. Hospitals across the state reported an increase in admissions and a shortage of drugs on Tuesday. 

With this, Chennai continues to top the new cases list. Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said that people should take containment measures seriously and wear masks and follow social distancing norms.

Over 3,000 people were discharged and the state saw 25 new deaths on Wednesday. In total, the tally now stands at 9,54,948. Almost 8,87,663 patients have been discharged and 12,970 deaths were reported.

Meanwhile, several hospitals in Chennai reported a shortage of antiviral Remdesivir.

COVID-19 vaccination in Tamil Nadu

According to the Union Health Ministry website, a total of 40,21,060 beneficiaries got vaccinated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, while 26,46,528 people have been inoculated against the deadly contagious virus in the last 24 hours nationwide.
