Chennai accounts for over 50% COVID deaths in Tamil Nadu in 24 hours – Times Now

Chennai: With entire India grappling with the unprecedented rise in the number of daily COVID-19 cases, Tamil Nadu has been one of the worst-affected states.

The state on Thursday saw 12,652 new COVID-19 cases. The active cases count now stands at 89,428. Also, 59 people in Tamil Nadu succumbed to the deadly contagious virus, thus pushing the fatality count to 13,317. With this, the state cumulative tally was revised to 10.37 lakh.

COVID cases in Chennai

Hotspot Chennai is the worst affected district in Tamil Nadu. 3,780 people have tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday. 24 people died due to the virus in Chennai. 

27 other districts reported a three-digit increase and out of the 21 districts in Tamil Nadu where fatalities were recorded, the highest death was reported from Chennai.

Chengalpet saw five deaths followed by Madurai which also saw five. Tiruvallur also saw three deaths and Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam saw two deaths each.

Apart from five deaths, Chegaplet saw 900 fresh COVID-19 cases. Tiruvallur witnessed 510 new cases and Kancheepuram was 392 cases. With this, the total tally in the Chennai region has now breached the 5000-mark. 

Coimbatore witnessed 689 new COVID-19 cases and one person died due to the virus. Altogether, 2,224 new cases and seven deaths were reported from eight districts.

COVID testing and vaccination

More than 1.13 lakh people took the RT-PCR tests. Out of that, 36 people have tested positive for coronavirus who have a travel history from another state. 99,129 people were inoculated on Thursday and in the past 80 days, over 50 lakh people have taken the jabs.
