Five zones account for maximum number of active cases in Chennai – Times of India

Chennai News
CHENNAI: Five zones in the city alone have added the maximum number of active cases, with about 1.5 lakh active cases added in the past 10 days excluding the 89% recovery rate.
Since April 16, the cases in the city have been rising steeply and Teynampet now has 3,192, followed by Anna Nagar (3,168), Kodambakkam (2,823), Thiru vi Ka Nagar (2,690) and Adyar (2,497). On April 16, the city had 22,420 active cases and on Tuesday, exactly 10 days later, it was 31,142.

Madhavaram zone, which had 851 active days 10 days ago, on Tuesday had 1,199 active cases. Also, zones such as Sholinganallur, Alandur, Ambattur, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Thiruvottiyur, Madhavaram and Adyar have registered a 50% increase in fresh cases over the last week.
Greater Chennai Corporation officials say they have no idea how the cases rose steeply as there weren’t many clusters as well. “At least last year, we could identify many clusters. But now if you see in Kodambakkam zone as well there are not more than 30 streets with more than 10 cases each. The clusters are not big. But every day there are many people turning positive,” said an official.
On Monday, however, another official said that for reasons unknown, there was a decreasing trend. “In every zone, the number of new cases added are lower. The testing numbers remained almost the same. Whether it is due to the lockdown or people adhering to Covid protocols, there has been a minimal decrease in the number of active cases in almost every zone,” said an official.
Dr P Ganeshkumar, epidemiologist, assistant director and Scientist D at National Institute of Epidemiology, said though the number of discharges is increasing there is a high number of fresh cases daily. “The increase could be due to clusters. There will be many unknown clusters in workplaces and also undetected or unreported small gatherings,” he said. He added that the authorities had look at weekly percentage increase in cases to drill down the focus.
