34,867 new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu; 4,985 in Chennai – Times of India

CHENNAI: On a day active cases in the state breached the three-lakh mark, the state recorded a decline in fresh cases for the third consecutive day on Monday. The state added 34,867 new cases and 404 deaths to the Covid registry. After discharging 27,026 patients there were 3.01 lakh people undergoing treatment.
Among the 404 who died was a 26-year-old pregnant woman from Tirunelveli who died on May 22 due to covid-induced pneumonia. She had tested positive on May 18.
After nearly 26 days, fresh cases logged by Chennai dropped below the 5,000 mark on Monday. The last time the city had fresh cases blow 5,000 was on April 28. While the Greater Chennai Corporation, with an estimated population of 1.1 crore people, reported 4,985 new cases in the city, Coimbatore district, which has a population of 40 lakh, logged 4,277 cases on Monday. While cases in Chennai have been seeing a steady decline, the western district has been making a quick climb, overwhelming healthcare system and leaving doctors, nurses and paramedics exhausted.
In the Chennai region – with 1,899 cases in Chengalpet, 1,231 in Tiruvallur and 813 in Kancheepuram – there were 8,928 new cases compared to the tally of 10827 among the eight western districts. On Monday, Coimbatore had 33,325 people under treatment compared to 48151 in Chennai. While active cases in Chennai region was 84191, the western belt had 82240 people.
Besides Chennai, Coimbatore and Chengalpet, seven districts in the state reported cases in four digits. Tiruppur (1808), Erode (1467), Madurai (1453), Trichy (1268), Thiruvallur (1231), Thiruvannamalai (1120) and Kanyakumari (1083) reported more than1000 cases each. While Thanjavur reported 918, 11 more districts reported more than 500 cases each. Perambalur (127) had the fewest number of positive cases followed by 215 in Sivaganga. Oxygen and ICU beds in most teritary facilities across the state remained full throughout the day.
Barring Kallakurichi, all districts in the state reported deaths on Monday. Chennai
(81), Chengalpet (38) and Salem (38) reported the maximum number of deaths in the State. Coimbatore reported 28 deaths followed by 22 each in Kanyakumari and Trichy.
