CHENNAI: The Madras high court has said it would soon consider imposing a complete ban on keeping captive elephants in the state.
The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy also said Tamil Nadu must ensure the wellbeing of captive elephants in the state and ethical treatment of all animals.
The court made the observation on Monday while hearing a PIL to ensure adequate supply of food and water to stray animals during the complete lockdown. The department should now chalk out a holistic plan for the general treatment of stray animals in the state, the court said.
