CHENNAI: Evening showers are likely to make a comeback as weathermen have forecast thunderstorms with light to moderate rain for the city starting next week. Bloggers said trace spells will continue for a few more days and by the weekend, rain intensity may increase. Chennai subdivision has so far registered 243.5mm of rain, a 20% surplus this season starting June1.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast, “Light rain to occur in some areas in the city and the neighbourhood.” The sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperature will be around 36°C and 27° C.
In its five days forecast, the nodal weather agency has said, “Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain are likely to occur at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining interior districts of Tamil Nadu.”
While usually the city receives rain when southwest monsoon takes a break over other parts of the country, officials said monsoon spells may continue over the west coast this weekend when Chennai and its neighbouring districts receive rainfall.
This is because “north westerly winds may move over the coastal areas like Chennai and bring convergence based rainfall,” a meteorologist said. Further, global weather models indicate that the winds and convergence activity are likely to be supported by an upper air circulation, where warm air rises and cools down with altitude causing advection, that may form over south Andhra Pradesh and bring evening thunderstorms back, bloggers said.
Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam, which recorded trace rain on Tuesday night, have so far recorded 309.8mm and 239.5mm, about 120.2mm and 24.1mm above normal.
“Next few days may see the same 1mm or 2mm rainfall. But models indicate widespread spells starting this Saturday. Models show good rain activity around August 11 and 12,” said blogger Pradeep John.
