A few months from now, visitors who drive down to Mudaliarkuppam will be able to take a dip in the sea, play a game of volleyball, freshen up with a shower and lounge on a beach chair or just sit on a viewing deck and watch the sea.
Tamil Nadu Tourism has firmed up plans to carry out a makeover of Mudaliarkuppam into a beachside resort destination. Beach umbrellas, viewing decks, shower enclosures and space for beach volleyball, an activity centre for team or corporate activities.
The department is hoping to attract the visitors who drive down ECR for a getaway on weekends.
“The design is ready and a pilot will be done soon. The destination will be readied for tourists when the pandemic is over, said tourism secretary Chandra Mohan. “The place is unique and offers a chance for visitors to drive down, take a boat and reach a beach and spend time on the sands, bathe and relax,” he said.
“Under the revamp plan, we are planning to create some facilities for the people without tampering with the environment. There are no facilities now. The place to lounge, the activity centre, the viewing decks to watch the sea, all will be made of eco-friendly materials,” Chandra Mohan said.
Four sets of beach umbrellas and wooden beach chairs will be provided on the sands. The activity centre which will have a thatched canopy will offer people a chance to engage in team activities, play volleyball, and take a swim in the sea. A row of showers will also be set up for people to freshen up after a dip in the sea.
“We want to market the location among corporates for their team building or bonding exercises. A few basic amenities like a kiosk for water bottles can also be made. We will ensure that all waste is brought back at the end of the day,” the tourism secretary said.
About 13 acres of land has been identified for the new initiatives. Mudaliarkuppam boat house has water scooters, four-, six- and eight-seater boats and speed boats. There are also discussions to have houseboats at Mudaliarkuppam.
