CHENNAI: A 29-year-old history-sheeter was hacked to death inside his house at Madipakkam on Tuesday even as his mother made a futile attempt to save him from a tenmember rival gang.
The woman who tried to protect her son from being attacked suffered injuries.
The deceased, P Ramachandran, of Moovasarampet at Madipakkam, had murder and attempt-to-murder cases pending against him at Pallavaram, Madipakkam, Pazhavanthangal and Adambakkam police stations. He was also into ganja peddling. A history sheet against him was opened in 2016.
Ramachandran was recently released on bail and was staying at Madipakkam with his family. On Tuesday, he went to a court at Alandur in connection with a pending case and returned at 12.30pm. When he was about to have lunch with his mother Sundari, 10 men barged into his house. They attacked Ramachandran with sickles in front of Sundari, 60, who tried to intervene and suffered cut injuries.
After ensuring that Ramachandran was dead, the gang left in a car. The neighbours who heard the cries of the woman rushed to the house and found him dead. A team from Madipakkam station sent the body to Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem and admitted Sundari there for treatment.
Based on a complaint from Sundari, the Madipakkam police have registered a murder case.
Police checked CCTV camera footage and found the movement of Ramachandran’s rival Vasantha Kumar. They nabbed him and his gang members — ‘Thondai Appunu’ alias Vasantha Kumar, 27, of B V Nagar, Kumaran, 32 of Senniamman Street, Kilkattalai, Suresh Kanna, 30, of Tirunelveli, Shiva, 25, of Thenmozhi Nagar, Kilkattalai, Babloo, 34, of the same locality, PRakash, 29, of Kovilambakkam, Arumugham, 29, of Velacherry, Aravind, 28 of Adambakkam and Prashanth, 26, of Kovilambakkam.
Police seized one autorickshaw, one bike and nine machetes from them. Interrogations with them revelaed that Ramachandran had previous enmity with Vasantha Kumar over ganja peddling which led to the murder. Vasantha Kumar have warned him earlier on several occasions and once also attempted to murder him but failed.
