MADURAI: The Madras high court sought a report from the Tamil Nadu government on a public interest litigation seeking to create the posts of social workers and to fill vacancies of psychologists in all the central and special prisons for women across the state.
Petitioner K R Raja, a social activist in Madurai district, stated that the post of social workers in prisons are vital to ensure the mental wellbeing of the prisoners and to reform them. However, there are only three sanctioned post social workers at the Madurai, Coimbatore and Vellore central prisons. He stated that the post of psychologist is also vacant at several prisons.
A division bench of Justices Pushpa Sathyanarayana and P Velmurugan sought response from the state government and adjourned the case by three weeks.
