CHENNAI: A 28-year-old scheduled caste woman candidate, R Priya, has been named by the DMK as its mayor candidate for the Greater Chennai Corporation. She has been elected councillor from ward 74 of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone.
Priya, an M.Com graduate from Madras University from the 2016 batch, will be the youngest Mayor in Chennai Corporation’s history, after her formal election on Friday.
She will be the second-ever woman mayor of Chennai Corporation — the first one being Kamakshi Jayaraman, who was the mayor between 1971 and ’72.
Priya is the granddaughter of former Perambur MLA Chengai Sivam.
