CHENNAI: Four men beat an autorickshaw driver to death, over previous enmity, at Manali New Town on Wednesday night and then posed for a selfie with the body to prove to their friends that they had committed the murder.
The photographic evidence posted on a WhatsApp group led to the arrest on Thursday morning of A Madhan Kumar, 31, A Dhanush, 19, K Jayaprakash, 18, and S Bharath, 19, before a court sent them to jail for the killing of K Ravichandran, 32, of Vellivoyalchavadi.
Police said the slain man had picked up a fight with Madhan of Old Nappalayam, his friend, a few days ago.
On Wednesday, Madhan invited Ravichandran to a liquor party at a playground in Manali New Town, saying he wanted to sort out the differences between them.
Since leaving for the appointment, his phone was switched off and he remained unreachable. His wife Keerthana and several of her relatives went in search of him and reached the MRF playground at Vetri Nagar.
Ravichandran lay dead in a corner with Madhan and the three others clicking themselves with the body. After the four men threatened them with dire consequences, Keerthana and the others found the body with injuries all over the body and evidence that he had been attacked with liquor bottles.
The body was sent for a postmortem to the government Stanley Medical College and Hospital. And a a case was registered. “The selfie helped to identify the murderers,” said an investigating officer. Based on Keertahana’s complaint, Avadi police commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore formed special teams who launched a hunt and nabbed the four accused of the killing after tracking them to a spot near Edayanchavadi.
