CHENNAI: Great Goals, which teaches football, basketball and multi-sport ABC (agility, balance, co-ordination) to children aged between four and 16, is marking its 10th anniversary this year.
Launched by Priya Gopalen and Sandhya Rajan, two women without a sports background, on January 18, 2013, Great Goals has the distinction of being one of the six football academies in Tamil Nadu accredited by the All India Football Federation. They also launched Just for Girls, Chennai’s first girls only football programme, in 2015.
“We launched Great Goals when we were unable to find a child-centric football coaching programme in Chennai for our kids,” says Sandhya Rajan, who has worked for over 17 years with children in pre-primary, elementary and high school settings.
“All our coaches are trained in first aid and life support, and we provide much-needed encouragement for girls sports,” adds Priya Gopalen, an engineer who worked on urban sustainability and planning for 17 years before joining Sandhya to launch Great Goals.
“On March 8, 2022 we launched football coaching for girls in villages in and around Ranipet, and we had an overwhelming response, with over 66 girls registering for the program,” she says.
