Tamil Nadu Chennai Coronavirus News Live Updates: In a bid to enforce isolation and social distancing among citizens to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Chennai, the Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal on Wednesday issued a circular banning public gatherings, demonstrations, human chains, meetings etc within the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Police for 15 days from August 12 to August 27.

The order exempts gatherings or processions which have been permitted by the CoP, religious processions and gatherings at places of worship, processions or gatherings for sports, weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies, meetings held under a statutory authority or under the State or Union Government and meetings or gatherings exempted by the State or through a Special Order.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu reported 5,871 Covid-19 cases Wednesday, taking its total number of cases in the state to 3,14,520. Chennai reported 993 cases, taking the city’s tally to 1,12,059. The city has been recording less than 1000 cases a day for the past one week.

With 119 deaths today, the death toll climbed up to 5,278. Among the deceased, 107 had comorbidities.

A former Rajya Sabha MP, Duraisamy joined BJP on May 22, a day after he was stripped of his party post by DMK leader MK Stalin.

Tamil Nadu BJP vice-president and former DMK general secretary VP Duraisamy on Wednesday said next year’s assembly election is going to be a battle between DMK and BJP.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Duraisamy said being the ruling party at the Centre, the BJP has the right to lead the alliance in Tamil Nadu ahead of assembly elections.

“Till last week, the 2021 elections were projected as DMK vs AIADMK, but after the departure of Ku Ka Selvam (DMK MLA from Thousand Lights constituency), it has become BJP vs DMK. This is a sign of our growth, we are growing fast in Tamil Nadu. Like-minded parties would be part of the alliance, we will lead them because we are a national party,” he said.

The reaction from Duraisamy comes days after Tamil Nadu BJP leader L Murugan said the AIADMK-BJP alliance will continue in the 2021 elections.

Four students from Tamil Nadu pursuing medical education in Russia drowned in a river in that country and directions have been issued to bring back their remains back home at the earliest, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said on Monday.
