New infections outpace recovery yet again in Tamil Nadu – Times of India

CHENNAI: The number of new Covid-19 cases marginally outpaced the number of discharges in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, for the second day in a row. While 5,005 patients were discharged, 5,015 of the 90,107 tested at 65 labs tested positive. As many as 65 died, taking the Covid toll to 10,252.

With 44,095 active cases, TN, with 6,56,385 cases so far, remains the fourth worst-hit in the country. At present, for every 100 confirmed cases, seven are under treatment at healthcare centres or at their homes.
Though the number of active cases seems to have dipped in the last one week, the number of new infections grew by an average of 0.8% daily.
Chennai topped the infection rate on Sunday with 1,250 new cases, while neighbouring Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur together had 614 cases. The region also accounted for almost half of TN’s deaths.
The number of active cases in Chennai rose by 18.3% in the past 10 days, with the city now having 13,751 people under treatment. Chennai’s positivity rate was above 10% throughout this week.
West TN had the second most infections on Sunday, with almost one-third of the fresh cases. Coimbatore again topped with 389 new cases (total 4,917), followed by Salem with 294 (total 2,313). Condition in Erode (163 new cases), Tirupur (172) and Namakkal (159) too didn’t improve last week.
Other districts in the south, north and central regions reported less than 600 new cases on Sunday. In Madurai, which reported 70-80 cases daily last month, 97 tested positive on Sunday. Thanjavur (181) recorded less than 200 cases and the number of active cases dropped below 1,000 for the first time in October.
