Tamil Nadu Telangana Assembly Elections COVID-19 January 11, 12 Highlights: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast for Tamil Nadu till January 14. Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, warning of widespread rainfall, thunder and chances of lightning till early Friday. “This will be mainly under the influence of the presence of a cyclonic circulation laying off Sri Lanka coast over the Bay of Bengal,” stated the weather update issued by RMC, Chennai.

Tamil Nadu recorded 682 positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the state tally to 8,26,943. The state recorded six deaths on Monday, putting the state toll at 12,228. All six of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. A total of 869 patients were discharged following treatment, putting the total number of recoveries at 8,07,744.

A day after a protest in Chennai to demand his political entry, Rajinikanth on Monday clarified that he has no plans to revisit his decision to abstain from the political arena and asked his fans not to pressure him further. “Do not put pressure on me to change my decision to not enter politics by holding rallies. My statement was clear about why I am not entering electoral politics,” he said.

Jallikattu, the traditional bull taming sport, will this year be held on January 16 at Alanganallur in Tamil Nadu. The ‘Muhurta Kaal’ for the event was held on Sunday, attended by Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar, along with other senior officials. Udhayakumar said local bodies have been given detailed instructions, and arrangements like putting up barricades and constructing separate spectator galleries will begin soon following Covid-19 protocols. Drinking water facilities, parking lots, and toilets will also be set up. Apart from this, all three venues –– Alanganallur, Avaniyapuram and Palamedu –– will be under CCTV surveillance.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday suspended the notification issued by the State Election Commission to hold Panchayat elections in the state. The commission announced on January 9 that it will hold panchayat elections in four phases. The elections were scheduled for February 5, 9, 13, and 17.
